An honest conversation with John Oliver (in absentia).

Greetings, I usually have deep respect for the work that you do.
But now let’s have that honest conversation that you asked for.
I will attempt to shed some light on the pertinent facts.
I will start with Hamas, which is a designated terror organization. It is designated so because it intentionally targets civilians with rockets, suicide bombs, gunfire, and other atrocities. The Hamas came to power in Gaza in 2006 following a unilateral Israeli withdrawal from Gaza; today, there are no soldiers nor settlements in Gaza. Hamas is funded by Iran, which also funds the Hisbalah and actively supports the Syrian regime. Both Iran and Hamas seek to destroy Israel and all the Jews in it, and we know this because they keep on repeating it and are actively pursuing this goal. This friendship is extraordinary and demonstrates how Israel promotes peace in the region as Iran is Shia and Hamas is Suni, which do not always see eye to eye. In the 15 years that Hamas controls Gaza with an iron grip, Hamas built an arsenal of rockets and an underground city of tunnels with the explicit goal of waging war on the zionist entity.
This leads me to my first point of euphemisms, Hamas is not a disorganized band of poor refugees that had no other choice but to pick up arms to defend themselves. It’s a well-funded terror organization with goals similar to ISIS, al-Qaeda, al-Shabab, and other noble organizations.
When talking about “Freeing Palestine,” it needs to be understood that it means one thing, the destruction of Israel and, at best, the expulsion of all its Jewish citizens.
The second point is about “tit for tat” Israel is stronger. Still, when Hamas started pouring, literally, thousands of rockets at civilian targets, it sent millions of Israelis into bunkers and paralyzed much of the small country.
Accordingly, to stop these attacks, the IDF started attacking military targets, many of which are intentionally embedded in dense population centers; this is self-defense. Without this calculated provocation, Gaza would not be fired upon.
And we know this because the PA, which controls the West Bank and doesn’t lob rockets into cities, has experienced precisely zero bombings for the duration of its existence.
Hamas didn’t start bombarding civilian targets because it was fighting for freedom; it started its terror attacks with the explicit intention of gaining political clout and reaffirming public opinion. And this time, they got a big win in the form of a self-righteous comedian with a reputation for poignant and nuanced observations on complicated topics. But this time, for some unfathomable reason, you became a mouthpiece for an antisemitic terror organization. Your actions have consequences; antisemitic attacks are rising worldwide and in the US and are driven by media coverage. When you decided to through your formidable weight into this discussion, you made the world darker by siding with terrorists and oppressive regimes.
The thing that needs to be understood is that had Israel been weaker than any of its opponents at any point in the past century, it would cease to exist. The jews that toiled to build this land have no other home waiting for them. I will be first to admit that this democracy is not perfect and does a lot of stupid shit, including events and decisions that preceded the last bout of fighting. But none of it deserves the threat of annihilation nor a demonization by you.
If you have a critique to pass, go ahead; it’s welcome, but please perform the due diligence you usually have when creating your segments.

And now this:

P.S.

Dear Trevor,
This is a minor clarification to your segment about the conflict. In 1948 Israel was created; between 1922 and 1947, Israel was under British rule. Before that, the land was controlled by the Automan Empire (Turks) for about 500 years.
